Remote server hosting - Remote servers (physical and virtual ability) are shared between multiple customers; that is why they can be used as a service model. Businesses that provide remote server hosting services place their equipment in secure data centers and only allow their customers to access it over a private network connection. Customers have complete control of the Software installed on these servers regardless of how much or little they use them. Therefore, this is not typically thought of as Saas but more so as a cloud-based service because you have complete control of your hardware from a software perspective without the vendor being involved at all. Using a web browser, users can log into their Desktop Virtualization portal, where they will download an agent that allows them to connect to their host system using RDP (remote desktop protocol) and use their host system as if they were sitting in front of it. Desktop virtualization allows users to increase their hardware up-time by providing a redundant machine if something goes wrong with the primary system. There is no limit on how many desktops or partitions (virtual machines) can be provided, only limited by the amount of disk space available to each partition and data throughput. Users can set different profiles for custom login screens and session settings based on specific needs such as full-screen resolution or local administrator access levels.

Platform as a service (PaaS) - Vendors provide the infrastructure needed to deploy applications without managing servers, storage networks, etc. Instead, customers write software code using development tools provided by the vendor, which are maintained and upgraded by the service provider. Examples include, Heroku, Facebook App Center, Google App Engine and Windows Azure. The code is stored at the vendor data center, so developers cannot download or backup their code locally. One benefit of PaaS is that companies can eliminate redundant customizations for similar applications (e.g., different sites that use the same underlying platform).

Application as a service (a) - The application may be hosted within the cloud or on-premises. Still, it does not control underlying cloud infrastructure like servers, operating systems or storage devices like IaaS/PaaS models do. Instead, all power remains with the application owner and infrastructure is shared between multiple application owners. SaaS and AaS are the most common types of cloud services. Examples include Google Docs, SalesForce CRM and SugarCRM Community Edition.

The advantage is that the vendor supports and updates applications, so they take care of patching and updating software applications, making it easier for companies. It also allows companies to pay as you go, meaning there's no need to purchase expensive software upfront when a company does not know how much it will use in the long run.
