This article will show you everything you need to know about explanation videos, the basics of explaining them, explanation videos examples, and tips on making the best explanation videos. How should an explanation video be used for startup businesses? I've got the answer. Let's go!

Explainer Videos & Why You Need One

Explainer videos are short, concise, and engaging. Without a doubt, they have been the hottest trend in marketing for the last few years! They must be famous if so many businesses are using them these days... But what exactly is an explainer video?

Explainer videos are a great way to promote your product or service simply by showing it. This type of video shows who you are and what you do – just like a commercial – but instead of talking about it, you show it. Explainer videos can help you present new ideas, promote a product/service, introduce a brand & its values - basically any idea that needs promotion without advertising which could seem too "pushy" or sales-oriented.

To make an explainer video, you need a good script and a good voice-over artist – but what makes an explainer video take-off is animations that fit your content. Live-action explainer videos can be another variant to consider if you want to create the best-animated explainer videos. In video marketing, it is essential to create a good explainer video to increase your sales. Marketing videos are not easy, but our services will enable you to create your own explainer video without much effort.

It takes a lot of time to create an animation for an explanation video – especially if it's not just a still image with some text on it - so companies usually work with professional studios, marketing agencies… Or they hire freelance animators from sites like Fiverr or Upwork. Who can make their explainer videos? If you need to promote your startup business by creating a product/service explainer video, you don't have a team of professional graphic designers who can do this for you... Well, you're in the right place! Today I'll show you how to create amazing explainer videos without spending too much time or money! A DIY animated explainer video is another popular type of awesome explainer video.

If you need to promote a product or service but don't want to seem too sales-oriented

Explainer videos are a great way to introduce your company and its values in a simple, straightforward, and entertaining way.

By showing who you are and what you do, an explainer video can help people understand your product or service without needing to read long, boring text. So watch our explainer video now and see how we can help promote your product or service!

The Basics of Explainer Videos

There are tons of articles and tutorials on the internet about making an explainer video... But they're mainly focused on explaining what it is. So, I'm not going to talk about theories – instead, I'll show you my favourite explainer videos with their best pieces of advice & all the details I can think about... And let's start with some basic rules!

A short explanation video should be less than 1 minute long. It might seem easy at first, but don't underestimate this rule. You have 2 minutes or less to tell everything that needs to be told in an obvious way… Which can be challenging – but you have to do it.

There are a few ways of how explainer videos can be used:

- To introduce new products/services

- As an intro to a webinar, conference... Or as a presentation at any event where you need to explain something about your company or its values. This is the most common use of explanation videos.

- You can put them on your website or blog as well. For example, if you're a blogger and write about fashion - why not create an explainer video on dressing on some special occasion? Your viewers will love it!

Don't forget that only 29% of marketers use video successfully right now… what makes your explainer video tremendous and different from the other 71%? Only you can answer this question.

Explainer Videos Examples to Inspire You

There are tons of great explainer videos on the internet – and it's hard to choose only a few, but I'll do my best here! Some of these videos will show you how to make an explainer video for your startup business as well… And who knows, maybe someday yours will be next on this list?! Let's go! 1) Dropbox - How it Works (Famous)

To start with, one of the most famous examples: is Dropbox. This video is excellent because not only does it tell you how to use Dropbox... But also why you should use it and what's so special about it. Finally, it's an explainer video that works!

Video elements:

- A story about using Dropbox in your daily business life makes it easy for you to forget about the hassle of storing documents on flash drives.

- Drawings that perfectly fit the overall mood of the video and help viewers imagine what Dropbox is all about from their perspective.

Instructions:

- Don't include any texts or voice-over artists in your explainer videos if they're not necessary to understand the meaning of your content. In this case, I would even say there is too much text...  But don't do anything without reason! Only add texts if they enhance your video's meaning or make it more professional/trustworthy. If you're unsure, try to imagine if there was no text at all. Would it be understandable?

- If you can't animate your explainer video yourself, don't give up! Look for support with animators on Fiverr or Upwork. Make sure they master the basics of animation and let them know exactly what you expect from their work so you won't have any unpleasant surprises later... Also, ask for examples of previously created videos or show them some other explainer videos to inspire their imagination.

2) Buffer - How it Works (Famous)

I like this one because I think that the how it works section is very important for every explanation video (of course, if it's about the software or other product). When you tell people how exactly it works, they know what they're buying and if it suits their needs or not. And that's why Buffer did a great job here. They turned something that could be boring into something exciting!

Video elements:

- The video follows the same simple rules as Dropbox's one... But adds more drawings to make it feel even more fun and playful, which perfectly fits its character.

- It has only 60 seconds, so I wouldn't recommend you to watch this entire video if 1 minute is way too short for your company (it might also be confusing), but I would use some of these ideas in my explainer videos like using funny characters instead of or making an animated story about your product.

Instructions:

- If you use your explainer video on your website or blog, make sure it's made with the same quality (or even better!) than the one you plan to share with people on social media like Facebook, YouTube...  People usually click only if the thumbnail looks professional and exciting! And that's how they will expect your video to be.

3) Squarespace - How it Works (Famous)

This is probably the most "professional" explainer video on my list. It has a lot of elements that are typical for this kind of video, so if you want yours to stand out in some way, focus on qualities like design/animation/audio… Just don't copy Squarespace's video, do it in your style!

Video elements:

- A story that shows how valuable the product is for a natural person. In this case, a girl has her own business and needs to make an online portfolio website.

It was done by hand, making it look even more professional and trustworthy (like most explainer videos). And not only the drawings... But also the photos they've used, and fonts were very carefully chosen. All of these make it look amazing!

Instructions:

  - Make sure you create your script before you start working on anything else! You don't want to waste time figuring out what text should go where while creating the video (and vice versa). Plus, if you create a detailed script, it will be easier for your video maker to understand what you want from the video.

Although I said earlier that text is unnecessary in explainer videos, sometimes it's worth adding... But only when it makes your video look more professional/trustworthy or adds something vital that you cannot explain by using different images. Don't put too much information into one video! If 1 minute isn't enough for viewers to understand what your product is about, make separate videos, for example, "how it works" and "pros & cons" - people will watch them both even though they've already seen an explainer.

4) MailChimp

MailChimp doesn't have an explainer video on their main page, but you can see one below the post description if you go to any of their blog posts. It's not that long (30-45 sec), so it's perfect for your website or blog!

Video elements:

- A story... But only when they briefly show how people use MailChimp +. They've added some animations, which was a great idea! This way, viewers are more likely to watch the whole video.

Instructions:

  - MailChimp shows us people who would benefit from using their service, so I think this is also something you could do in your explainer videos. If there's someone who could be interested in using your product, show them in your video! Even though MailChimp's video is very similar to the one I've already mentioned (Squarespace), they still look different because they feel.

5) Vidyard - How it works

If you want to make an explainer video, for example, how your product works... Or if people could use it... This is an excellent example since there are lots of visual elements that show viewers what Vidyard does. The only thing I would say here is maybe to create more variations so there wouldn't be too many drawings/photos with text on them. It makes the video look random and unplanned at times!

6) Affinio - How it works (Famous)

Alright, the last example, and then I'll finish this article with some words about explainer videos! Affinio's video is probably the shortest one on my list, yet it still has all the essential elements that an explainer video should have. The only thing I would say here is to add more visual elements because now, there are only photos and drawings... But not much of them compared to other videos we've seen so far.

Although most people say that long videos don't work anymore... And they prefer short ones instead. It depends on your target audience and what you want to achieve. If you want people to watch a longer video and learn more about your product, you shouldn't shorten it. This is just my opinion- I'm not saying that short videos are nasty!

Last words:

There are many great examples of explainer videos all around the web, so it's effortless to get inspired if you want to create one yourself. But remember that this type of video isn't for everyone... Only businesses who offer products/services, for example, should use them. If you don't want people to buy something from your website or blog, there aren't any reasons to use an explainer video. They will probably look unprofessional and won't help you increase traffic or conversions (which is what we're trying to do with our sites, right?)

Explainer video definition

Explainer videos are short promotional clips that explain how your product works, why people should use it etc. It's a great way to engage people and tell them what you're offering without creating many texts with boring information.

1) Why are they so popular?

Explainer videos have become popular because many businesses have started using them for marketing purposes. They've noticed that more viewership leads to better conversion rates which means more money in the end! Also, all kinds of businesses can now easily create their explainer video even though they don't have any previous experience or additional knowledge about video editing... All thanks to programs like Adobe Spark Video!

  2) Great Examples are lots of great examples all around the web! The most popular explainer videos come from Buffer, Dropbox, PayPal, and Twitter companies. These fantastic companies know how to make explainer videos that provide information about their product in a simple (and sometimes funny) way. They also do it so that people can easily access the information they want and don't leave the video saying, "What was that for?"

We should do mix all kinds of visual elements because this is what makes our explainer video look unique (and not boring).

3) Why Should You Use Them?

- Now you're probably thinking if your company or website needs an explainer video since they can be pretty expensive... Well actually. It depends on how much money you want to spend on creating one. Indeed, video editing isn't cheap, but we can now create explainer videos thanks to Adobe Spark, even though we don't know anything about it! This is probably the best thing about them if you ask me...

If your business doesn't have a lot of time and/or money for an explainer video, then I would recommend using some free animated software like GIFs or Adobe Spark Video. They are short and easy to make, so just let your imagination run wild- The result will probably look cool if it's created by someone who knows what they're doing! Or else, you can hire a freelancer on websites like Fiverr or Upwork to create a better explainer video.

  4) So, Do They Work? Yes and no... They work, although most people will probably say that they don't work because of the short attention span we all have these days. Creating an awesome explainer video can increase traffic and conversions if done in the right way (I'll provide examples after).

5) Are They Expensive?

Yes and no... It depends on what kind of company you are in and how much time you want to make your explainer video. A professional service usually costs around $500 but only if you give them every detail about it. Of course, there is also the option to hire someone from Fiverr for $5-$50, which works great if you're starting with your business.

  6) Should You Make One?

You don't have to, but it will help increase traffic and conversions if done correctly, so that I would recommend it! People are now used to watching videos instead of scrolling down through texts so take advantage of that... Create an awesome explainer video for your website or blog and watch how people become more engaged over time!

  7) Examples Here are some excellent examples from the companies mentioned before:

Buffer's explainer video is one of my favourites because they give people what they want (and expect) in less than 45 seconds. In addition, they use nice graphics that make their explainer video look like a perfect game if you want people to engage with your product.

Dropbox's explainer video is something that I like because it gives the viewer a feeling that the product is easy to use while providing valuable information! They do that by creating an "explainer video tutorial," which works great in most cases, even though not everyone likes this kind of thing.

Twitter's explainer video looks exceptionally professional and somewhat scary too... This means they spent a lot of time working on graphics, animations, etc. Their explainer video successfully talks about their company but also shows how easy it can be for users to sign up ;)

Finally, Adobe's Spark Video did a fantastic job creating an explained video tutorial that teaches people how to use their products! The design looks very simple, perfect for this kind of explainer video because it will immediately grab people's attention.

Guide to making an explainer video

1) You have to prepare yourself with some information about your company or product which you will need for the video.

2) Create a script so that you know what you're going to say! The text should be kept relatively short and easy to read in under 1 minute because this is how long viewers' attention usually spans last.

3) Record an audio version of the text if needed, then add background music (optional). Of course, if you don't sing or rap very well, I would recommend finding someone who knows their stuff... But I guess singing is not everyone's favourite thing to do...

4) Get ready for editing and start making your explainer video using Adobe Premiere or After Effects software. I'm sure there are plenty of other great tools that you can use as well!

5) Upload the final video to YouTube and promote it on social media or just on your website if needed.

Enjoy the advantages of your new explainer video!

I'm not going to lie and say that creating an animated explainer video is quick and easy because it can be pretty complicated, especially if you don't know what you're doing or have the right software.

Benefits of using an explainer video

First, explaining your company, product, or service in less than 1 minute is a challenging task, but it's also highly beneficial for business owners! These short videos allow users to learn more about companies quickly without having to read long pages, which will result in increased sales because people are usually lazy...

Second, animated explainer videos are incredible tools for marketing because they present information about your company while making it very interesting, making viewers want to watch them again. An animated video is a good option if you add some diversity. You can also try creating whiteboard explainer videos.
