About

Sydney Hegele (they/them) (formally Sydney Warner Brooman) is the author of The Pump (Invisible Publishing 2021). They are the winner of the 2022 ReLit Literary Award for the best Canadian books published by independent presses, and a finalist for the 2022 Trillium Book Award. Sydney is also a Tin House Summer Workshop Alumnus (2021). They are a white settler, living with their Fiancé and French Bulldog in Tkaronto, covered by Treaty 13 with the Mississaugas of the Credit. They primarily write from the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat peoples, which is currently home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. They are represented by Cassie Mannes Murray at Triangle House Literary Agency for their debut novel Bird Suit, funded by the Canada Council for the Arts Research & Creation Program. Sydney received an Honours Bachelor of Arts in English Literature & Creative Writing from Western University, where they served as Western’s Student-Writer-in-Residence (2017/2018), Co-President of the Undergraduate English Society, Editorial Assistant for the Canadian Poetry Project, and Editor-in-Chief of the Slam Poetry publication SNAPS. They are a former Artist-in-Residence at the TAP Centre for Creativity, a former Fiction Editor of Patchwork Literary Magazine at the University of Iowa. Sydney's poetry, fiction, and experimental work has been published in American Chordata, The Quarantine Review, The Temz Review, Occasus, The Gateway Review, Coffin Bell, and others. Their short story "The Bottom" was shortlisted for The Malahat Review 2020 Open Season Awards.​ Their work frequently explores intergenerational trauma, religion, queerness, mental health, and intimacy in all its forms, against the backdrop of Southern Ontario Gothic small-town living.
