About
To Whom It May Concern,
I am a recent graduate of York University’s Theatre program, and it is with great interest that I am applying for the position. I desire to share my love and passion for theatre through a position that will allow me to play an instrumental role in the development, coordination and implementation of drama and theatre-related programs. My past work and training experiences have provided me with skills that have proven invaluable to my growth as a leader and theatre practitioner, and I believe they will serve me well in this role.
My history in the theatre industry began in 2014 when I was cast in Tarragon Theatre’s production of the play Concord Floral. I returned to Tarragon two years later as a playwright, and again in 2019 to participate in the Scarborough Project where I was able to bring my first play, Chasing Home, to life with a workshop performance. Throughout this process, I was allowed to participate and gain firsthand experience in community building and collaboration, as it involved the bringing together of several local high schools with the University of Toronto to produce a festival celebrating youth and theatre. This opportunity has allowed me to both develop and demonstrate my capabilities of working with others through the creative process while also meeting the challenges presented to me. The skills I learned have served me well, as I wrote, produced, and performed my own play, Hot Broth, for the Toronto Fringe Festival in 2021.
Moreover, participating in Tarragon’s Young Playwrights Unit as a “Senior Youth Writer” allowed me to develop my leadership and collaboration skills as I assumed the responsibility of guiding and supervising young playwrights in bringing their work to the table. I found a wonderful satisfaction in taking part in their journeys to tell their stories and most importantly, it confirmed for me that my passion lies not just within theatre but in mentorship. As a Program Staff and eventually Lead Program Staff with the Boys and Girls Club of East Scarborough for the past two years, I have acquired experience developing and coordinating theatre-related programming for children in school-based and virtual environments. In this position, I enjoyed learning how the many different students engage in the work to bring out the best of their strengths and support their weaknesses. This role has not only enhanced my written communication and problem-solving skills, but also my leadership capabilities as I often was delegating tasks to volunteers and co-op students. I believe that these resilient attitudes will translate well into my ability to perform my duties and excel in this position with your company.
My theatre background, leadership experience, and education work have provided me with the skills necessary to succeed in this position. Thank you for taking the time to read my cover letter and I look forward to an opportunity to further discuss my suitability for this position.
Sincerely,
Troy Sarju
