About
I am a skilled writer, editor, and communicator with a creative bent and a love for helping others succeed. A few years ago, I had my sights set on getting my English PhD and becoming a professor. Ultimately, I decided that I wanted to explore work opportunities that allow me to be a bit more creative and have a boots-on-the-ground, hands-on approach while still using my writing, communication, editing, and research skills. My current role as Academic Quality and Professional Development Coordinator is a dynamic role that involves overseeing and improving the quality of the college's operations, educational curriculum, program quality, and faculty members. I use my writing communication skills on a daily basis - both verbal (delivering presentations or PD sessions, chairing program advisory committee meetings) and written (creating our college newsletter, writing and editing reports, evaluating course design). Overall in my role, I'm responsible for professional development (facilitating, creating sessions for, and presenting at PD Days), quality assurance (audits and reports, classroom observations, course design approvals), and events planning (Student Orientation, Program Advisory Committees, Campus Tours).
In my previous roles, I have worked as a conference producer for the American Biomanufacturing Summit at Generis GP, a Content Writer for Nightingale Corp., a teaching assistant at U of T and Western, and a variety of customer-facing jobs, including personal training, which I still do as a freelancer.
I have a wide-variety of experiences and a broad skillset that I believe makes me an ideal candidate for this role. I am a strong communicator who has experience with writing reports and proposals, and with giving presentations. I have a plethora of experience planning events in my current role at Cestar College and my past role at Generis. I am used to coordinating staff and making sure that team members are organized, supported, and proficient. While I do not have experience with negotiating with suppliers and vendors or in overseeing event budgets, I know that I am a quick learner and have experienced similar things before (negotiating with faculty members, speakers, and clients, creating and managing my own budgets for my freelance personal training). I am used to wearing many hats -- in fact, I thrive in environments that allow me to explore and practice a variety of my skills, especially while interacting with others.
I hope that you will consider me for this role, and would be delighted if given the chance at an interview.
Best wishes,
- Meg Desmond
