Brendan P. - 14738 Public Affairs Director from Ottawa

About

With over seven years of experience on Parliament Hill working for a number of Ministers and Members of Parliament, including Deputy Prime Minister Freeland, as well as managing a number of political campaigns in Canada and the United States, I possess the skills and experience that makes me an asset for managing public affairs. My relatable educational background is of two undergraduate degrees, Political Science and History, as well as a post-graduate certificate in Public Relations. I have a wealth of experience in consulting with a variety of stakeholders on issues, policy files and long-term communication planning and am quick to decipher key political issues while focusing on building relationships towards common interests. I was fortunate to work on a number of modern files on regulation of the internet during my last position at Canadian Heritage. I deeply understand the public policy and regulatory issues as well as the perspectives of regulators, cross-party legislators and sector stakeholders. As the issues and policy advisor to the Minister of Canadian Heritage, whose mandate included regulating web giants and modernizing Canada’s digital governance, one of my duties was rapid response to any issues from these very politically contentious files. Each morning I would represent the Minister’s office on the daily issues briefing with the Prime Minister’s Office where I would advise on strategy and then draft the lines to be used by the Minister and Prime Minister during public appearances. Additional roles included overseeing and approving strategic communications, key messages and speeches for committee, Question Period and media appearances for Ministers. A sound understanding of policy and public perception on these evolving and complex files required an ability to be dynamic, quick thinking and creative while working within a large team in order to properly brief Ministers, Members of Parliament and media on background at a moment’s notice. My fascination with the power of narrative, our ability to interact, shape and relay these narratives while connecting Canadians makes this role particularly appealing to me. Prior to the 2015 election I was a Social Media Manager for Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party Facebook and Twitter pages while completing my Public Relations post-graduate degree. During that time, I saw firsthand how an inclusive and fresh communication plan is valued today and can support policy work towards sustainable change. Throughout my career I have always enjoyed being a part of a team; be it managing a forestry crew throughout my summers in university, the captain of my university soccer team, or the founder of a forestry company abroad - I thoroughly enjoy camaraderie and building partnerships. Being naturally calm and having a keen emotional intelligence, good humour and result orientated approach is what keeps me amiable and professional in challenging moments. I hope to carry this spirit with me to Rogers Communications. Sincerely, Brendan
