General Machinist responsibilities include:
- Selecting appropriate cutting tools, workholding devices, and tooling instructions according to the type of machine being used
- Calculating dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and Vernier calipers
- Setting up and operating machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, drill presses, honing machines, and grinders to cut or shape metal parts
- Monitoring the feeds and speeds of machines during operation to adjust the cutting depth and prevent damage to the workpiece
- Inspecting finished products for flaws and making necessary adjustments
- Keeping records of completed work and maintenance schedules
The ideal candidate will have experience with interpreting blueprints, engineering data, and other drawings to determine the specific machining operations required.
